sharing MySQL with remote servers?

This might be a dumb question, but I was wondering if I can share my MySQL database with another website, hosted on a different server? There are a couple of us that have a similar service on our website, and we have been talking about networking them together, basically trying to use a centralized database, so both sites would be in sync with each other.

Can a page from another server access MySQL on my server?

that depends on the mysql settings, instead of using "localhost"
in mysql_connect(), use the respective IP or domainname

some webhosters don't allow remote-access though, ask or try
