id field delete problem

Hi guys!

I just discovered this site and I must say it is what I've been looking for!

I am doing my final year project at the university and I am building a database on MySQL using as a front end PHP.

My database has many fields and I named the first one id just to keep track of the records and perform some tasks as well.

I made this field unique and auto increment.

The problem is that every time I delete a record, the id field does not go back a number.

What I mean is that if there are 10 records in my database and I delete one, when I try to enter a new record instead of taking 10 as the id number, it takes 11.

that's how mysql works. What's the problem? Are you trying to get a count on how many records you have?

This can be an irritating feature but it is needed.

My ICT teacher used to be in the Army. His unique ID was something like 485266 or whatever. Even though he left the army, they will not assign that number to any other solider.

um, that isnt PHP.
That is a feature of the database when dealing with AUTO_INCREMENT indices.
