The smallest OS in the World in term of size and easy of understand

anybod out there can recommend the Operating system which in terms of size, level to master is small ?

i know Minix, any order which in i mean the core only, no extra flashy thing...

if we have the core, then we can develop app around it...

There are also some kinds of *nix OSes that fit on a disk, but they have a whole lot of nothing... They're great for word processing, though. (Check out http://www.thinkingnerds.com/projects/minirtl/minirtl.html if you want something like this.)
