php page parse error

I am a newbie with PHP pages, and modified a form page a friend created for my nonprofit org to create a new form page for another project. I added some fields and took some away, but when I load it to our server I get this: "Parse error: parse error in /web/u243//www/resources.php3 on line 308" Any ideas on what could be a common cause for a 'parse error' and what to look for in fixing it?

Usually a typo, a missing ; or a " not escaped. In your case, it appears that you have too many slashes or you need to escape one - either way, your path looks weird.

does the line 303 the location of the error in the script? My document doesnt have 303 lines unfortunately, and if there is a suggestion of how to easily try to find the error (method in Wordpad, other software that would help) that would be helpful?

A line doesnt refer to a physical line, it refers to each statement terminated by a semi-colon.

As for finding the error, obviously you would go to the line and take a look. The problem may lie on the line itself, or be the result of an earlier error that the interpreter thought was acceptable.

If the error is given on a line is that outside the number of lines the script has, then it could mean that somewhere or another the interpreter got confused by incorrect code.

Maybe you could attach resources.php3 for us to look over, if you don't mind sharing code.

Actually, it does refer to a physical line in the file (unless my recollection of PHP3 is too hazy - certainly it's the case in PHP4).

If the complaint is about an error on line 303 of the cited file and there are only 302 lines in the file, then chances are the error is a missing } (or spurious {) somewhere.

I would appreciate any help with this. Other than going through it line by line to find the semi-colon (which I did, and couldn't find it), I don't know the best means to correct this problem. Any other input on the script in this file would be helpful as well. thanks all!

This identical script is running OK on a page we currently have...am I missing another 'else' in the picture?

yeah, that one. in general, it is like this: whenever you start grouping statements together as a block with {, you need a corresponding closing } somewhere to indicate the end of a block.

I don't believe that the 'else' was a problem..it stands alone, and the before and after blocks are closed.

The error states my parse error is on line 47; any other ideas, anyone?

are you sure you attached the complete code? please check it.

what you attached returns a parse error on the last line, because:
- the string is not terminated
- the else block is not closed as mentioned

adding "; after <p>&amp;nbsp;</p>
then the closing bracket
}
and the closing php tag
?>
fixes the parse error easily when testing your code.
