Major help required, inserting java into php

Am trying to incorporate some software written in java and can't get it to work.

Is it possible to insert java script into a php file (i.e no html, is pure php), or even better does anyone have php code that determines if the browser being used to access the script is IE or Netscape?

i think the only option is to just echo/close-reopen brackets..

it could work like

<?
 $somecodestuffhere
?>
<script>
 function blah(){
  javascript code;
 }
</script>
<?
  $backtophpcode here
?>

you can just echo it with
echo "<script>code</script>";
too..
