GD - GIF Create Support

Hi,

I've been looking here:

I need to enable GIF Create support using php does anybody know if I can code php to enable it as I do not have access to the server config.

I think that PHP must be compiled with gdlib < 1.6 in order to have support for GIFs. There was a copyright war, or something. You can use PNG's though with the newer gdlib. If PHP wasn't compiled with gdlib, you're probably stuck 🙁

You can't use GIFs at all with GD. There were licensing issues with the Lempel Ziv Welch (LZW) compression that GIFs use.

Does it work??? Besides, why is it a shame? PNG is the superior format anyway, and I don't know of any graphical browsers of any significance that can't display them.

Indeed, PNG is the god of all image formats. I think ImageMagick has GIF support, but I'm not sure. (I don't use it, so I don't know.)

Right, this is the 'copyright war' I ref'd. I think that the lifetime of the LZW license is up soon, maybe this year even, but most people should probably convert to PNG anyway....

Nonetheless, I'm pretty sure that GD lib DID contain GIF support until the LZW sh*t hit the fan, so if you could find an old lib.......... nah, you really shouldn't do that 😉

Yeah, I think it does run up this year.

I can't believe this! I released a script that ran beautifully with GD1.6 and a newer version has these issues. Mr Giff or who ever prevented this is a T*AT No wonder so many people get the error message call to undefined function imagegif()!!

Back to the drawing board!!
