String replacement

Hi,

I've had a look through various threads but can't seem to find exactly what I'm after (sorry if I'm repeating a thread I may have missed).

All I want to do is remove all non-alphanumeric characters in a string. I don't want to replace them, (which is what ereg_replace does I believe), with anything else I just want them out.

What should I use ?
