What is the best deal for web hosting?
Free would be best, but I just want to see what everyone is using. I dont want banners, pop-up adds, etc. Of course, I need PHP, MySQL.
The more space and bandwidth the better.
I'v looked at phpwebhosting.com, phpmyhost.com, 1sthostweb.com, stokia.com, and others. I'v seen that some reccoment phpwebhosting, but that doesnt seem to be the cheepest choice.
Also, stokia.com offers domain name registration for 13$. At other places, it costs 35$. What's the diference?
Does anyone care to share what they think?

Thanks,

Wally

yes, I'v looked at many of the hosting sites others talk about through the search, and they all SOUND great, but I want to know what people ACTUALLY use? which ones are free but total crap? and which do you have to pay for but get a lot in return?

No, no, guys....these resources must be liberated from the overlords.

Gee, Wally (heh!) what you should do is find someone who owns a business, say, minimum $1M/annum, convince them that you're the ultimo in the IT world, and set up your server on their net. You supply the box, they supply the electricity, ISP, heat/AC, water cooler, etc., etc. Once in a while, you do a little coding for them at a 'discounted' rate.....

Isn't this really what we all want to do? 😃

That is acctually a really cool idea dalecosp.

I should have thought of if 😃

Actually, I'd really like to be on Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman Island, sipping a Margherita, soaking up rays and getting my feet wet in the clear blue ocean...

but your idea is okay, too I guess 😃

Been there. Loved it. Especially Stingray City 😃

              Heh, Heh....I'm closing tomorrow & Friday...guess where I'm going?

(I love to frustrate the masses by constantly going off-topic)
                That's a double shut-up from me too, dalecosp! :p :p

Gee, you didn't even guess.... šŸ˜‰

I'm not making GC...a bit far for a weekend. But there is a beach there...granted it's so early in the season that it'll be COLD...and I don't know about their margueritas....

My wife just wants to shop.

Elizabeth, get that deadbeat security guard hubby to use some of that vacation time!! šŸ™‚šŸ™‚

At the risk of getting back to the original topic, I'd suggest using caution when considering the question of running your own web server. There are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of zombie servers out there which have been taking over and are now being used for attacks of one sort or another. Just try connecting a server directly to the internet and watch the logs. It's amazing how many attacks will come in.

Maintaining a secure server is not easy and requires constant attention.

On the other hand, I wonder if the owners of phpbuilder have ever considered getting into the hosting business? Seems like a trusted name could make some money.

... who have contributed their 0.02$.
Now I have somewhere to start 😃

                      thanks again,

                      Wally-o

It does require some attention. Quite a bit, perhaps. However, the learning experience is tremendous, the rewards are considerable, and there are a few simple principles to keep in mind.

                        1. Apply every patch that comes out, immediately.

                        2. Firewall everything.

                        3. Disable all nonessential services.

                        4. Read your logs and admin mail. Subscribe to security bulletins and maillists.

                        5. At the risk of starting a religious war, don't use Windoze.... šŸ˜‰

Isn't he a parole officer? Although, I guess that's not much of a difference, huh? šŸ˜‰:p😃

And people, we're trying to have a conversation here. Stop interrupting by trying to get it "back on topic!" Sheesh!

Hmm, mebbe that's the correct job. Have to go back and do some searching to make sure.

As for OT/OffT, how's this: grandcayman.com is registered by an Oklahoman and hosted on Linux in Dallas by theplanet.com, which itself is hosted on Solaris 8. And, if you want, they'll host your site. Or, you can go to netcraft.net (like I did) and they've got a list of 'top hosters'.....

Now, seeing as this guy is just parked there, did somebody down in the warm seas miss the boat?
