Limiting the length of a word

Someone recently posted close to 600 exclamations within the body of a "reader commentary" section on one of the sites I maintain. The exclamations did not line-break at the end of the table, but instead stretched the table out in one long line (at least on my broswer), destroying the page layout.

Is there any way to have PHP look through a string and limit the length of each word - say to 32 characters?

Any help would be appreciated.

you could read the text into a variable, explode by the space (which would mean each array key's value would hold a different word), and loop through it running an if

foreach($array as $value) {
   if(strlen($value) > 32) {
      echo "The word \"" . $value . "\" is longer than 32 characters.<br>\n";
   }
}

Would become:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This:
Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!
Would become:
Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh
