Reading from a file to a database

What is the command for getting MySQL to read from a file and insert the data into a database?

I've found what I'm supposed to use
the LOAD INFILE command but I can't seem to get it to work.
here si my query

LOAD DATA INFILE '/home/robert.y/source/testdev.cd-wow.com/materials.txt'
INTO TABLE w_material (display_name, description)
FIELDS TERMINATED BY '|';
