Basic sessions - php 4.06

Could someone please tell me what the basic syntax is for establshing a session variable from a value posted from a form in php version 4.06.

All the tutorials i have seen seem to say what to do for later versions of php but i cant make any work on this version. would appreciate if someone could show me the basic syntax for sessions for 4.06 so i can develop it further from there.

use the session_register() function:

session_start();

if(!isset($varname)) {

session_register("varname");
}

$varname = "foo";
