php and perl

i know you can use perl in php, but i have never even begun to read on perl, and i'm not very advanced with php but i'm getting much better 🙂

is there any tags to use perl within? <? ?> is php and there's 3 kinds of those that are all usable the same way 🙂

if i was to use perl in a php script, how would i do it?

and my host is a wacko, perl is installed but i get an internal error for right now trying to use it, so i can't even test if i am doing it right lol.

he's gonna fix i though.

Well I coded perl and to tell you no there isnt, there is something like, but in Perl I used...

good question.....

well you see my host has not figured out how to get GD running on my domains, which is bs.

so we found a copy of GD.PM which is a perl version of gd, and that is on my server.

i wouldnt' be using it, if i didn't have to.

i think i'm gonna jump on my own server here, just rent one, i could use it that's for sure.

nope, sorry, not with PERL, i hate the language, and if anyone else reads this i don't want any arguments, cuz i don't care about the PERL arguments, i just don't prefer it, my opinion, PERL is a very valid language, i just don't like the way it works

I wouldn't bother calling perl from php. Just make some of your pages .cgi and do it all in Perl. It's not as easy to work with as php, but you should be able to do what you want.

i have discovered that PERL is not corretly enabled on my server and neither is PHP for that matter, alot of the functions are disabled and stuff, pretty stupid.

having the host fix that asap!

good thing you found that out before busting your nuts thinking you didn't know what you were doing, btw, i am curious, what host are you using so i can steer clear of them

One last thing - the name of the language is Perl (first letter capitalized), the interpreter that runs is perl (no caps). There is no such thing as PERL, its not an acronym. You would get savaged in some Perl forums for incorrect terminology. :eek:

Actually I believe PERL is an acronym for "Practical Extraction and Reporting Language' not that I like see it capitalized.

Perl has been said to stand for "Practical Extraction and Reporting Language" (by it's fans) or "Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister" (by its detractors). In fact, Perl is not an acronym; it's a shortened version of the program's original name, "pearl", and when you're talking about the language it's spelt with a capital "P" and lowercase "erl", not all capitals as is sometimes seen (especially in job advertisements posted by contract agencies). When you're talking about the Perl interpreter, it's spelt in all lower case: perl.

Here's an excerpt from any interview with Larry Wall (the guy who created Perl)

Marjorie: Well, that certainly answered the question fully. I must admit I didn't expect you to go back as far as the beginning of the Universe. :-) How'd you come up with that name?

Larry: I wanted a short name with positive connotations. (I would never name a language Scheme'' orPython'', for instance.) I actually looked at every three- and four-letter word in the dictionary and rejected them all. I briefly toyed with the idea of naming it after my wife, Gloria, but that promised to be confusing on the domestic front. Eventually I came up with the name pearl'', with the gloss Practical Extraction and Report Language. Thea'' was still in the name when I made that one up. But I heard rumors of some obscure graphics language named pearl'', so I shortened it toperl''. (The ``a'' had already disappeared by the time I gave Perl its alternate gloss, Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister.)

I'm sorry but Perl is more efficient, nearly bug free, and can generally run faster than PHP. I really don't see why PHP should be used for much than simple dynamic page display, as SSI is. I'd even go as far suggesting mod_perl be used instead of PHP, but it's just a pain in the ass.

I really hope PHP catches up to Perl in the near future; PHP is a good language, it just needs a lot of work.

when was the last time you looked at PHP, version 3?

do some research before making silly suggestions that perl is faster, there are many benchmarks out there and they all say that php is faster than perl and mod_perl

Just to add my 2 cents here:

Actually you could use Perl and PHP, but that would be really a dumb thing:

You could just write a Perl script "on-the-fly" (simply by fopening a .pl or .cgi file and fwriting to it) and then make a redirection via the header() function.

But, as I've said that wouldn't be very smart, since you could get even performance problems not to mention the code mess that would be mixing up the two languages... :rolleyes:
