warn somebody by sending mail

hi,

i have a site publishing in an intranet. I want to warn a user by mail when something occur on my site. How can i send a simple warn mail?

Using the mail() function, look it up in your PHP manual. Note: You will need an SMTP server.

is it impossible to send mail with out using smtp server?

if it is impossible where can i find and download a smtp server for installing on my apache server...

I doubt it, you will need some sort of way to send emails, if not an SMTP server then some other sort of mail sending server... As for getting one, lookup sendmail for linux, I think thats the main one they use.

If your using any of the major distributions you should find one on your installation CD.

PS: I'm not sure if its sendmail, I havent used linix in a while. A quick search at unix.com will tell you.

my apache running on windows. not on linux.

Windows 2000 Server+ come with an SMTP server. You can also mod 2000 Pro to use the same SMTP server.

I wouldn't recommend running a server on anything less than Windows 2000 Pro/Linux 2.x.

You can also use an external SMTP server if your machine is connected to the 'net.
