pulling records from db

hello. quick question. i have a database where there are repeated entries in a column(ex. group_name since there a 4 members to a group the name GroupA is stored 4 times in column grp) so i want to print out a listing of the groups on a page like this:

$query = "SELECT grp FROM Users WHERE grpnum = 1 ORDER by 'grp'";
$result = mysql_query($query);

<?while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) echo "$row[grp] <br>"; ?>

however, it prints GroupA 4 times. is there a way to only get it printed once?

Use the DISTINCT Keyword.

$query = "SELECT DISTINCT grp FROM Users WHERE grpnum = 1 ORDER by 'grp'";

the output will give you 1 distinct result for every different group name associated with the group number.

You could also use the GROUP BY Clause that will pretty much do the same thing

$query = "SELECT grp FROM Users WHERE grpnum = 1 GROUP BY grp ORDER by 'grp'";

If you are sure that only one group name is associated with one group nuber, youdo net need the ODER BY clause

You can change your query to let sql do it for you.

$query = "SELECT count(*) as GroupCount, grp FROM Users WHERE grpnum = 1 Group by 'grp'";

<?
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result))
echo $row[grp] . " -- " . echo $row[GroupCount] . "<br>";
?>
