Which forum/BB script should one choose to use and why ?

Anyway. The threads on any forum act as an archive, available to anyone whenever they need the info. Since I was just getting into bulletin board software, I read a few threads and decided to vote here and add my two cents.

Why, it was only moribund for a month ... Less.

Which would you rather have: one definitive thread on the subject that has all the relevant discussion in it. Or hundreds of little threads that start up everytime someone asks the same question that was asked hundreds of times before, and all redundantly containing the same things as each other?

But that's a topic for another thread 🙂

Why not every time a thread is started on a subject that has already been discussed, a mod use there mod powers to merge them!? 😉 Just my 2 cents 🙂

well this is just my opinion but that would take a hell of a lot of work on the mods part i would think.

Not a bad idea, in theory, Jebster; but Moonglobe's got the point in this case.

OTOH, it'd be funny to have some script that would parse questions and automagically move them to different (sub)forums. Of course, we'd have to make up a lot more (sub)forums.

Who wants to bet that the "Coding/register_globals" subforum would have the most posts ? 😃 :rolleyes:

I run my own vB, so I guess I'm partial; but most of the forums I post on are vB's and they run great. I've posted on phpbb's and they choke under heavy traffic, at least in my experiences. I use to run ubb, but it would just break itself after time went by, search page no longer worked, threads would stop working, etc.

I visit a fairly high trafficed(sp?) phpbb and it runs perfectly.

Both this forum and that have there occasional hiccups but all sites have that.

From an admin standpoint I have worked with phpbb and never vb so I can't speak to that.

The one thing that I do like about phpbb is the tons of mods that are available out there for the board you can change it to your hearts content. and after a while working within the template language becomes second nature so you can write your own mods if you want to.

A friend of mine is a co-founder of MercuryBoard -- www.mercuryboard.com (which at the time of this posting is down for redesign). It is an excellent forum, the easiest to mod that I've ever worked with. As far as features go, its a little behind the big ones such as PHPBB, but if you're looking for something that is an easy platform to leapfrog off of, take a look at mercuryboard.

I've taken a liking to YABBSE. It's nice and easy to skin as well, although (AFAIK) your users can't choose their own skins, but I don't think that's a problem really.

Lets throw this into the mix...

If a BB is stable with 1000 threads, 10,000 posts, its going to be stable with 10,000 threads and 100,000 posts. Once you start getting over x level its more likely to be the host server that starts collapsing under heavy traffic, not the board.
