mysql query problem - trying to add a field

i'm not sure but I think

ALTER TABLE phpbb_users ADD user_first VARCHAR NOT NULL AFTER yourfield

is what your missing, hope that helps....

Try this:

ALTER TABLE phpbb_users ADD user_first VARCHAR( 20 ) NOT NULL AFTER field ;

change the number inside the ( ) in varchar(20) to however many characters you want in that field, and after the "null after" inside the single quotes, type the name of the field that you want to place the new one after.

after doing what good little developer should have and reading the documentation on phpMyAdmin I found out that it requires a length property I wasn't giving it one.
