Retrieving data from an oracle database

I'm trying to retrieve data within an order from a Oracle database in conjunction with an online shopping basket.

Once a customer has purchased a product(s) I want the database to be automatically update the stock levels held in the database.

Any ideas????

Not familiar with Oracle query, but the idea is:

1. you know how many the customer purchased: eg. $purchase
2. you can check through query how many in stock: eg. $result[stock]
3. the new stock level: $stock=$result[stock] - $purchase
4. update the table by setting stock='$stock'

Do above after the purchase.
