Cross-checking ID fields in two tables

I am still working on my pseudo-message board. It's not meant to be anything like a vBulletin or even phpBB. The only thing it needs to be able to do is post topics and reply to them. I would like to know how to get the reply feature to work properly. I've heard that you need (in your database) an ID field for the topics table and a topicid field for the posts table and they need to be the same value. However, I cannot figure out how to make them the same value. If I could do this then it would be a lot easier. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. 🙂

The easiest way is probably a link like

<a href="reply.php?topicid=1234">Reply to this topic</a>

In reply.php have a hidden field in the message reply form

$topicid=$_GET['topicid'];

<input type="hidden" value="<?=$topicid?>" name="topicid>

The topicid will then be returned with the reply.
