I'm not that adept at php, but I just wrote a script to select random quotes from a quotes.txt

$quote = file("http://my.site.tk/quote.txt"); 
srand((double)microtime()*1000000); 
echo $quote[rand(0,count($quote))];
?>

My problem? they are IRC quotes ergo they have "<" and ">" in them, not to mention a couple of "&"s. What I want is to strip them of code (cos it's read as html) and and centered above the code the quote number... I also want a little search function in it so one can type in the quote # and have it pull up that specific quote or seach for key words and display all quotes that match, line by line with the quote # centered above... Can anyone help out?

Well, if you want to keep the < > in there, but still have them displayed and not read as html, use the htmlspecialchars() function on the quote before you output it. Comes in pretty handy, so that way you don't lose anything 😉 However, if you still want to strip them, use an ereg_replace, such as:

$quote = ereg_replace("<|>|&", "", $quote);

Which will replace all < > or & with nothingness 🙂

As for the rest of it, that'll be quite a complex little application, try writing it yourself using the manual and other tutorials as a guide, and if you have a specific problem, make another post and we'll see what we can do! 🙂

yeah, that's what htmlspecialchars() will do.

when you echo $quote make it this instead:

echo htmlspecialchars($quote[rand(0,count($quote))]);
