But a good thing is to have a quest.

Like make a form that inserts values in mysql from php and in time you will lern php.. it is the same for me im new... i hav made a form but it´s not completed yet but soon....

Play it around. If you have questions, go to mysql.com where there is searchable manual. The best way to learn is download a small php program that uses mysql. Read the scripts, and learn from testing and making some changes. hotscripts.com has a lot of php scripts for download.

webmonkey.com has a decent tutorial on php and mysql.

What I really took away from it was the form to insert the information into the database. You just need to replace the fields with your field names, and of course change the database, table, username, password 🙂

From that I was able to make input forms for all sorts of databases. I really suggest reading it. I used it to make a sort of weblog (still coding it, so it is not public yet sadly). Here is the direct link.

That's the same tutorial I used to get me started eternalprophet, now I program php for a living 🙂

My suggestion, read that tutorial, then find yourself a small little project. Be it a personal forum, a news posting page, a web journal, anything like that, that you can code yourself, and that you find interesting, and then make it 🙂

eternalprophet and matt4013 I wonder if you remember from that tutorial whether you experienced any problem writing to your database.
I am using it on RedHat 7.2 installed as per instructions on tutorial. It is PHP v 4.1.3 and I cant get the

               if($submit) {

lines to work.
The syntax of the command to write to the database (INSERT... works fine from the >mysql > prompt and I can read from the database OK.
Let me know if you remember a way around this.

I didn't have any problems, but let's see what code you have. It could be something very miniscule.

It's more than likely register_globals that's the problem 😉

Try and change it to if(isset($_POST['submit'])) {

That tutorial really is getting a little old now. I might write a new one along similar lines if I get some time. It really is very very handy!

I tried the register globals solution and it worked fine then. The tutorial was just written in a slightly older PHP version I guess.
