IP recording problem

I've been trying to record users IP address' using:
$_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];

I'm doing this to create a log file that contains a users name and ip address and other stats. But for some reason, instead of recording the users ip, it's always inserting the servers ip.

Any idea why?

i've had a similar problem...
use phpinfo() to find out what global var you need:

phpinfo();

ir4z0r

... or use getenv("REMOTE_ADDR")

maybe that gives you the correct one

Thank you for your responses, but they didn't work.

I checked my phpinfo file from my client machine and _SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"] has the servers IP address as its value. I don't know if that's what it SHOULD have or not.

Is there something else that might work, or suggestions for finding out why the code that SHOULD work is not?

I use this
$_SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"]

and it works fine. I do not get the server, I get the persons IP address. I have double quotes rather then single.

maybe this works:

$HTTP_CLIENT_IP

...it worked on a project of mine, where REMOTE_ADDR didn't..

$SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] and $SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"] have almost no difference, and should give the IP address from which the user is viewing the page.

Never tried $HTTP_CLIENT_IP though, I suspect it is $_SERVER['HTTP_CLIENT_IP'], is it?

HTTP_CLIENT_ID doesn't exist 😉

Is your server behind some kind of NAT firewall? If it is, it would more than likely be detecting the Remote IP as the one from the firewall, which is also the one that you would have to access 😉

um, it may or may not exist.
I havent really heard of it, but the list provided in the PHP manual is not exhaustive

really? oh 🙁 Surely you wouldn't rely on anything that's not in the manual though, that's asking for trouble.

No, I'd never rely on anything it says in the manual, especially when it says

Predefined Variables
The entries in this array are created by the webserver. There is no guarantee that every webserver will provide any of these; servers may omit some, or provide others not listed here.
