working out a percentage

Hi all,

I am trying to subtract VALUE ADDED TAX (vat) of 17.5% from a figure of £6528.97. I am having a few problems with it, if you know how to do this please help

i have tryed this but to no avail

$total = 6528.97;
$totala = $total / 100 ;
$totalb = $totala * 17.5;
$totalc = $total - $totalb;

echo $totalc;
?>

the result of this is "5386.40025"

I will be working the the VAT out on price ranging from as little as £9.99 > £9999.99 +

as i have just noticed

$total = 100.00
$totala = $total / 100 ;
$totalb = $totala * 17.5;
$totalc = $total - $totalb;

Returns "82.5"
and not "82.50"

Are you trying to format the output or are you asking how to get the correct result?

I think the way you are doing it is not correct. You are calculating VAT on the already added VAT.

You need to multiply your total price by 1/1.175 to calculate the original total price.

e.g.
total = 1000
original_price = 1000 * 1/1.175
VAT = total - original_price

Format it using sprintf or number_format (after doing the calculation).
