Is there anyway to create a universal error page?
If any error takes place period it automatically redirects to that page?

Like how coldfusion has <cferror>?

yes, you can. define your own error handling function and then trigger a user defined error [http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.set-error-handler.php].

your error handler should redirect to your error page then... (of course you have to ensure, that no HTML output has done before).

I don't know coldfusion, here is how I deal with error.


function errorPage($error)
{
   // load error page
   include("header.tpl");

   echo $error;   

   include("footer.tpl");
}

// so whenever error occurs, call this function

if ($name == "")
    errorPage("Name is empty");

sure... but with the custom error handling method you use the internal PHP error handling mechanism and its advantages (various error levels, line number in which the error occurs, etc.).

so why code it again? =)

Firstly I don't want that information to show up.
Secondly I want it to actually go to an error page ... not have my index page have 3 random lines of code saying an error has taken place.
Thirdly it's poor practice to have errors period but in the case they DO happen for some reason I'd like it to go to an error.php or similiar page.

did i say a word about displaying errors? a custom error handler can do whatever you want... e.g. doing a redirect to an error page.

b.t.w. it's also poor to treat all errors the same... there are errors that should be logged and others that just need a message displayed. so you need different error levels. at least if you do serious business with your application. period :rolleyes:

I understand what you're saying but I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying =)

You have an if statement to detect if the particular field isn't filled out.
I'm talking where there is no "if this is blank, give this error", etc. type errors.

I'm talking unexpected, not foreseen errors.

argh g... read the link about error handling in the PHP manual that i've posted before. you can trigger user defined errors and also catch (unforseenable) errors. so you won't need an if statement ...
