Dynamic Drop Down Menus

I don;t know the proper term for this, but what I want is a drop down menu. Once the user selects a choice there, another menu appears with new choices for the 1st selection the user made.

So basically catagories and subcatagories.
I want all this without a page refresh(so no hitting submit to present a new menu each time)
what is this called and how can it be done??

If you don't submit the form, then it never goes to the server before loading the 2nd select, meaning it couldn't possibly be PHP. PHP is processed on the server. You'd need javascript for this, as this is a client-side operation you're wanting to do.
