Using google API to search

I was trying to find code that would allow me to use google's API, I have found some on the web but they don't work. I have already got an access Key from google but I have not been able to use it. I have a string of values that I want to pass to the API and bring back search results. Can anyone help.

Wouldn't you need PHP-SOAP or something like it?
