making sure a field contains a-z,1-9 chars

I want to make sure that a password field contains specific characters i.e.

a-z 1-9

i'm sure there is a php function for this but i can't seem to find it this morning (it is monday after all)

You'll need to use a regular expression of "[a-z0-9]". It's case insensitive, so it'll work for all cases. It returns boolean (1 if TRUE, 0 if FALSE) for if it matches.
