Allow my localhost to send eMails

Hi,

How can I configure my localhost (under Windows) so it could send eMails using the mail() function. My code only works on a remote host (Linux).

Is there is a specific software to do so? Is there is some configurations that I should consider?

Note that I am using Apache server under Windows XP and I got PHP version 4.1.

You need to install and configure (correctly) a mail server on your machine.

There is a plethora of mail servers out there for windows. The only free one that I know of is mercury . Others include Mdaemon, Lotus, Exchange Server... and IIS even has one (although, those three letters put together, IIS, makes me shiver).

Just about every Linux distro will have sendmail; I understand postfix is pretty good though - and probably simpler (then again, just about anything is simpler than sendmail).

True that. Sendmail is outdated, and has some security flaws. Sendmail has always been the defacto standard... but there's much better mail servers out there today. On my linux box I use Qmail. I highly recommend it. It's actually Qmail combined with vpopmail and a couple other goodies... but combined they can do just about anything. I've heard postfix does a good job too.

I just found another mail server for windows (works with linux too) that looks really cool. It's kind of like Qmail for windows. It's called xmail. You can learn more about it here: http://www.xmailserver.com .

Just thought I'd mention another realy good Windows email server, MailEnable. There is a free version which works great, I'm using it without any problems. http://www.mailenable.com/ It's the best free one I've seen yet.
