Monitoring Web host

HI all,

I really appreciate all the people that help each other here this forum is great.

Situation:
I would like to host several webpages for myself & my friend. I would like to use php to monitor ftp traffic, web traffic and email traffic so i can determine how much my friends should pay when i get the bill from my isp. To prevent confilict between friends I would like to write this data into a mysql database and export the needed data into CSV into excel.

My question is that I am running a linux web server and I would like to monitor all the traffic that each of my friends do. Ive seen some good tutorials on web statistics but not for ftp statistics. Considering that ftp and email take most of the bandwith in my server( i think) then I really want to find one that can track them. I would also like to know one for email statistic. Can this be done and if it can where do i find the tutorial ???

I'm no Linux expert, but I don't think u can monitor FTP and/or mail traffic unless u actually use PHP to generate this traffic.
I suggest u use FTP and mail servers that log all their actions, and then you could use PHP to read the logs and store them in MySQL or export them directly as CSV.

Emily, like I posted earlier, you can't do that with php. You can read and parse logfiles to generate pretty looking graphs and statistics, but first you'll actually have to GET these logfiles. There's a really good tutorial on ZDNet, which I posted a link to in your other thread, which demonstrates the use of IPTraf for doing exactly what you want. IPTraf is a free network logging system that runs on pretty much any linux distro. Once you've generated the log files from that, THEN you'll need to write a php script that will parse the logs and insert the required data into a database. There are a few good tutorials on webmonkey, and there's a good one in the phpbuilder articles on file reading and manipulation.
