md5 doesn't work right for me?

I'm trying to merge a website's registration with a phpbb message board... the md5 password using the messageboard the password "rockit" enters as: 87dbed2ac49d86afe927fdcdcf38c386

my form (that has additional user info in it but i'd like one registration page for the website and message board) md5's the password as: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e

this happens consistantly but it is the phpbb md5 that is correct...

i looked at thier code and i'm doing the same thing: $user_password = md5($user_password);

has anyone else encountered this problem? what on earth am i doing wrong?

are there spaces in the password at the end or beginning? Is one password strtoupper()ed?

no.. but i think i figured it out... (it's so rediculous it's embarrassing) it looks like my $user_password variable was getting dropped before the sql write to the db... so what i was really md5'ing was... empty space :rolleyes:

There are still sevral other issues i'm encountering in trying to seamlessly merge the website with phpbb so i'll most likely be back with more...

thx for the reply (i'll also keep an eye out once my var is passing to check for spaces and casing)
