is there a way to use an external mail server to send mail through? (similiar to 'SMTP = mail.host.com', but for non Win32 machines) i dont want to set up sendmail on the box that the web server is running on and i have a mail server already set up on another box

If you want mail to be sent from the webserver, it'll have to have some type of mail service being run on it.
That said, you can tell its mail service to use the other server with Sendmail's SMARTHOST directive, IIRC.
