Help with "Undefined variable:"

The message below came up when i loaded my first from ever so please be nice i realise this is probably way simple but this is the very first time i have used php and i am trying to nut my way thorough by myself.

it comes up after the info is sent and i still get the email fine but i want to have no errors and how do i get it to go to another page to say thankyou.

Hi,

this is rather a configuration "problem". If you look at the php.ini you'll see that php is configured to even output notices and all sort of warnings. You cann suppress that by setting

error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE

This will show all errors except for notices.

The reason for this notice is that you use $formmessage for the first time within the while loop. It might be uninitialized. So to prevent the output of the notices do just something like

$formmessage = ""; in front of the while loop.

Same for the other variables

Hi,

sorry, I wasn't specific enough. You can't do it the above way if you're not the admin of the server (e.g. on a server of a provider).

The error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE; has to be put into the php.ini configuration file in the /etc directory on the server. But you might try to set it with the error_reporting() function by e.g. calling

All except notice:
error_reporting (E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE);

Disable:
error_reporting(0);

you need an extra equals sign in the if condition = sets the variable to the left to the value of the variable to the right.
== checks for equality.

Hi,

I think if you initialize the variables (which is even better than playing around with the configuration). As soon as you get rid of the error messages your header call will work. As long as you have warnings php will not send the header command to the client. So just initialize your variables and all should work fine.

by the way ... where does $email come from ?

TO BE HONEST I HAVE NO IDEA THIS IS REALLY HARD NOW I DO NOT KNOW WHERE I AM AT. SOMEONE GAVE ME THE CODE LAST NIGHT AND I JUST CANT GET IT TO WORK AS I HAVE NEVER USED PHP BEFORE AND I KNOW THIS IS GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME TO FIGURE OUT.

Hi again,

if email is a form variable

<input type="text" name="email"...>

then it might be that register_globals is off in your php.ini.

You might then want to use $GET["email"] or $POST["email"] instead of $email. Use $GET["email"] if you used <form method="GET" ...> or $POST["email"] if you used <form method="POST"..>.

General: Use $GET for get variables like those coming from URL's like script.php?vara=test => $VARA["test"] or $_POST for variables coming from posted forms.
