scalable web pages

i've been having a lot of trouble with designing web pages to fit multipul screen sizes... mostly between (800 x 600 & 1024 x 768).

I find myself coding pages mostly with php and some javascript here and there.. using photoshop & flash for graphics.

Can php be the answer? what are some of your seggestions?

How you design your pages depends on your audience.
The majority of the public user uses 800x600, so I usually make my sites for that size, BUT the majority of people who are technically inclined tend to use higher resolutions.

It all depends, but I'd say your safe with 800x600. The HTML portions of the page are gonna be pretty much the same whether you use PHP or not.

yeah, i have been coding my pages for 800x600, but i have had complaints that the page looks too small. So.. now i'm searching a solution that doesn't involve creating two sets of sites, one for 800x600 and another for 1024x768, for one domain.

i know it's possible, im just not sure how. these forums are scalable...

The only other way I could suggest is using the width of tables as a percentage, but I have found that to sometimes be unreliable. Plus if you have an image that is more than % width of a cell, it can screw everything up real nice.

As for coding the scalablitiy with PHP alone, I don't know.

yeah.. i try to use percents with my table whenever possible, but your right that can be a pain with graphics...
