*.inc files wont work!

PHP works fine but for some reason include files wont load right I get errors like this

Notice: Undefined variable: PHP_SELF in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\htdocs\header.inc on line 3

my system is:
winxp pro
apache server

I cant figure out what the deal is. I didnt copy the msvcrt.dll to C:\windows\system since the PHP folder that installed didnt have one 😕

I've gotten PHP to work fine in win98 (on my old computer), but not sure what the problem is now 🙁

I'm also getting stuff like

Does this same script work on your Win 98 computer? Also can you post the first few lines of each of those files? PHP is working right because you are getting errors from it so it's something in your code.

I don't think the predefined variable can be used in .inc file😕

$_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] should be available in an included file.
You do have to give a relevant code snippet and the version of PHP that you're using that produces this notice.

Of course you could also set PHP not to report notices, though I find it strange for something like PHP_SELF not to be pre-defined.

Hey, isn't there a setting similar to the register global vars that turns stuff like that one and off? My guess is that that setting is different between the version of PHP on your Windows 98 box and your XP. Compare your phpinfo() output for differences.

No, an include file operates in the same environment as the script it is included in as though it had been typed in by hand.

don't *.inc files need to be set on the sever to be processed as PHP before they'll work?

Not if they are included. Because the file will be "spliced" into the script it is included into. So it would be like it was one file.

the code works fine on my win98 computer not sure what the deal is here, if you want I can post the php.ini file

Can you give a reason why?
win98 ran it fine, and I had updated apache server and php on it. Cant remember if I updated the dll :o

im guessing that your new server has register_globals set to off. im not sure
if this affects PHP_SELF, since all the tuts i've read don't even give an
alternative, but if it werks now and not then i suppose it's the only answer...

register_globals being off would mean that $PHP_SELF would not be available.

I assumed that it was off and you were using $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'], sorry about that.
