Hi, is there a latest mime list to be downloaded? Because I realise some file format will return me nothing when use mime_content_type().

hi what do you mean?
for example:

test1.pdf returns me nothing
test2.pdf returns me application/xpdf (something like that)
test1.exe returns me nothing
test2.exe returns me ms dos application (something like that)
test3.exe return me plain text

how come so inconsistent?

are you doing this with a file uploader to check what someone is uploading, like with the copy function, cuz if you are, you can use the

$uploadedfile_name
$uploadedfile_type
$uploadedfile_size

to get the mime type, real file name, and the size to check

If register_globals is off, you can use $FILES["uploadedfile"]["name"], $FILES["uploadedfile"]["size"] and $_FILES["uploadedfile"]["type"] respectively.

The official list is maintained by the IANA (Mime types in particular are listed here). mime_content_type() uses the magic.mime file, which contains the usual ways of identifying files by looking at certain specific bytes.

The file that maps magic numbers to MIME types is typically a system configuration file on Linux systems.

Hi, I'm using FTP, not the usual http upload.
And using PHP4.3.1 with IIS5 in winXP environment.

whatever, maybe you could post some code instead of giving the very least information possible, then this thread won't run on til i'm 90 yrs old

ftp_put($conn_id, "./webapp/".$ffilename, $v.$ffilename, FTP_BINARY);
$fsize = filesize("./dump/".$ffilename);
$ftype = mime_content_type("./dump/".$ffilename);

Please note that the above code works. Do not worry about the variables. The only problem is getting the filetype ($ftype). Like i say in my initial threads, they are not consistent and do not return correct mime type something. I don't know why.

and you can't use the type thing with ftp, you are still using a form, correct, if so you should be able to use the type thing

Hi, I did not use <input type="file">. Instead I use <input type="text">. Just a normal textbox. So what I get from the FORM is just a normal string...

so where are you grabbing the file from, please explain a little more how this works, i'm not too familiar with using ftp with uploading and forms and such, and is there any way you can use http, this would prove to be easier for this problem you are having anyway
