Gnome is slow

I am running Red Hat 8.0 on an AMD-K6 400mhz with 128mb RAM.
The Gnome GUI seems to be very slow. Mozilla for instance takes about 15 seconds to load. Is this normal? I would value any suggestions as to how to speed loading times.
I did wonder whether I should increase the swap size as I installed Linux with only 64mb RAM and the swap would have been configured in the install for this amount.

Gnome and KDE both require 'modern' hardware to run at their finest. I'd think 64MB RAM is too little, and over here in BSD land, we generally configure swap space at 2x memory....

I prefer KDE for the primary reason that the versions I've tried have always been faster and more stable than Gnome. At work I ran a PII-300 and at home I still run a K6-2-350 with 128 Meg ram.

It ain't fast, but it ain't slow either.

My workstation at work is now a 1.1 GHz machine, and both Gnome and KDE are suitably fast on that platform. It also has 512 Meg RAM, which helps.

Can you add memory to your machine? 128Meg is still pretty small for a Gnome / KDE workstation.

i'm using WindowMaker.

It's fine if you don't need a complete desktop.
It's a very simple and easy-installing window manager that starts up instantly in a PII-350 and allows you to execute the same applications you are using in KDE or GNOME, but much faster. Other "light" window managers are icewm or enlightenment

128 MB of RAM is a little low for RedHat 8 in graphical mode, we have a box configured with a 300 MHz AMD-K62 and 128 MB of RAM with RH8 and X is unusable on it, even though it works fine from the command line. I would suggest 512 MB or RAM or at least 256 MB.
