image colors out of wack

I'm working on my own lil version of a image-to-text converter, and it all works except one thing: the colors.

I've tried imagecreate and imagecreatetruecolor, with varying results. truecolor returns more colors, but darker colors show up as bright green or red in big chunks, and some chunks of dark color are fine. I've no idea what that problem is.

imagecreate has less of these spontaneous color glitches, but of course less colors, so it looks like crap.

My guess is that the problem lies somehow in how I get the colors.
Any help would be appreciated...

What do you mean by "image to text converter?" Are you simply outputting an HTML version of an image, or are you attempting to scan for potential letters and print out what was found?
If you're attempting the former, the code you have should work, noting that $w and $h must be looped through.

It's outputting to html, much like this dealio . And it does work, but chunks of dark colors end up being odd colors like bright red or green.

I don't know if it's some sort of palette issue, or if the colors aren't being converted to hex correctly?
