I'm running WinXP, and I can't find mysql.sock.

All my PHP pages that try to connect to MySQL always say that it can't connect through the mysql.sock file. Well, I've asked people where the heck that file is, and everyone tells me the same thing...in some kind of /var/lib folder. So, I looked all around and realised that there is no /var/lib folder in WinXP. So, does anyone out there know where it is for WinXP users?

you sure you got the correct mysql file to install, i don't see that i have a mysql.sock file on my win2k comp, and when people are talking about var/lib/blah....., they are referring to a linux box

well, I got the one for Windows 95/98/2000/XP. It's the MySQL 4.0.12 version

Ok, well i still don't have a mysql.sock, try having a go with www.foxserv.net and checking that out, it is a really win32 way to get php/apache/mysql/perl/python installed with the click of a button, however sometimes it is hard to get stuff upgraded if you need to, but for testing code it seems to do alright, as long as you keep register_globals off, your code should work just about anywhere

In one of those threads, someone made a very astute observation. Is your MySQL server RUNNING?? Since you are on a Windows hosted machine, you shouldn't have a mysql.sock file.

This means that your php.ini file may be misconfigured.

look for this text in the php.ini file:

; Default socket name for local MySQL connects.  If empty, uses the built-in
; MySQL defaults.
mysql.default_socket =

mysql.default_socket should not be set to anything, be sure that it isn't.
If this isn't the problem and you still have trouble. Contact your hosting company.
