MySQL newbie question

I've just started off with building my first database. I've installed MySQL and phpMyAdmin. Which is the best practice of making a database? Should each db have one table with multiple fields or multiple tables in the database. Remember, I'm still very new and trying to learn, so be patient with me. Thanks.
