New and need Help!

I am new at PHP and MySQL. I have an project that requires me to do to things.

Create a login Page with validation of the user id and password.
Create a database where information can be accessed from a web page key word search function. The information for the database includes names of individuals, their contributions, time frame (ie 1930-1976), and their mentor(s)

Can anyone tell me how to get started? The platforms are Apache on Windows 2000 NT.

i think the best thing to do is use an already completed script and change it to your needs. Althought doing something of what you ask should be take long to accomplish.
but if you are new and have relatively little experience in PHP using someone else's code will (should) help you understand how php works.

grab an easy-to-understand PHP book, which explains how to use PHP and MySQL to create a simple application, for instance Guest Book. Get the main idea and start to develop other similar applications.

For your case, you also need to learn about how to set cookies or how to use session for the login script.

I personally find it rather difficult to learn from others people sophisticated scripts. Most of the time, they contain thousands lines of code and it is just confusing to start with. I dunno.

when you install php Windows Binaries read this print

if php not execute in apache mode!
