Does a .htaccess box works properly under Windows IIS?

If yes, how can see who is logged in? I need to get the name of the logged in user in a variable...

The pop up box to give name and password appears, but when I ask for the value of the REMOTE_USER, it seems to be empty...

Please help me, I'm getting desperate 🙁

Why would .htaccess work with Microsoft IIS?

Why do you have to use IIS?

I was hoping it could work...

I have IIS because my boss wants the Apache site migrated to IIS...

why if you are using php would you want the site moved to IIS, very unstable

Because everythin else here is workin with Windows, and nobody knows anything here from PHP and Apache. So for security reasons they want to migrate...
I'm just doing my internship here, I just have to do what they tell me and I don't like it because in my opinion IIS suck with PHP...

thats fine if you have everything on windows, you can run apache with windows

I know, because I did some research on the web...but here they really want it to be with IIS

any particular reason they want iis, i could talk them out of it, and yes i know everything is windows

If security is important, you should use Apache, not IIS!

IIS has had 15 security vulnerabilities patched within the last year.
                  Apache? None.

We're not trying to be difficult, but you are asking web server questions on a PHP forum and we feel that Apache/PHP/MySQL is absolute heaven.

Most people using IIS are using Microsoft's scripting language, ASP, which is a nightmare.

I think they are just Microsoft freaks ;-)

But my internships ends in less than 2 weeks so...

so.....install iis and apache, do all your work on apache, they will never know the difference

no access to the server 🙁

But nevermind, I'll try to convince them to use Apache and otherwise they will have to search for an other solution...

The whole site works, except for the pages for administrators where a password is needed.

And since I will be back in Belgium in 3 weeks (I work in Portugal now) I won't have to worry about it anymore then

Instead of giving the original poster a hard time and aruging about the server he uses, WHY not just answer his question?

I happen to use IIS for my personal server and who gives a flying $&*% over your opinions; just answer the damn question. IF YOU DONT know the answer, dont post.

                          god damn apache/linux fanboys

Anyway, to the original poster, go to "simulate" .htaccess on a IIS server, you have to set up your security through your IIS services/manager panel.

Like any "permission" based folder on a Windows environment, you assign security that way.

Here are some resources for you:
                          http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/iis/deploy/rollout/steps.asp
                          http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum23/1065.htm
                          http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/ask/query/48

why don't you chill out wizy, get off the board if you are gonna be an arrogant dick, apparently the original poster isn't too fond of the proprietary M$ crap either

instead of harping on what he has to work with why dont you offer an answer that is going to work for him instead of saying "iis sucks get apache" ???

so who gives if he hate ms or not. he asked for an ms solution, not to be harped on about his (or have no choice) about using iis.

dude read the whole thread, someone also brought up the point on security, as did the poster, and we weren't harping on him, he saw it in good humor, cuz in the end he REALLY didn't care either way, chill out and take some good mood pills, obviously you can't take any humor, you need to rethink your attitude when posting on here, i've been here awhile and am pretty sure i know how to post, i don't need any help from you, and you are in a pretty bias place to get into a linux vs. windows disagreement

i also personally use win2k/apache/php/mysql to develop cuz it's easier, but i wouldn't put my production site on iis/php, its just not stable enough, and i don't think either is win/apache/php stable enough for production

                                  hey Jyotsna,

you wanna mark this thread as resolved with the link at the bottom

                                  thanks

                                  stolz

C'mon guys, settle down, this is supposed to be a help forum, not somewhere you argue about crap that doesn't matter.

Stolzyboy, WizyWyg was right when he said instead of harping on their choice of server, just help them out with what they need (though the apache/linux fanboy comment was a bit below the belt  ) . Sure, you might not like the server that they're using, and sure, they might not like it either, but their bosses want to use it, and in the real world, you give your advice, but once the boss makes the decision, that's what you do. It's a bit different if you're working for just your clients, but when you're with a company you NEED to do what you're told once the decisions have been made, so you a) keep your job, and b) have a good reference when you leave.

WizyWyg, everyone's opinion matters, and they WERE just trying to help. Don't flame people. Sure, discuss things, but there's no need to insult people. If you know a better answer, give it, and then give your reasons why it's a better answer. Makes everyone's life much easier.

                                    Matt

that's fine matt, but you too are mistaking HARPING for something else, it was more in good humor than anything, and he was taking it that way

anyway, he wasn't too serious about it cuz he was merely interning and is leaving in 2 weeks

and believe me i know about the whole boss thing, and if you get enough information about your subject you are talking about, more often that not, they are at least willing to listen to your side before dismissing it

as you can probably tell i am not just someone to spout off about anything, i have helped many others as you can probably see by post numbers, i spend a lot of time (free time, and work time) here helping people, and i enjoy it, and don't appreciate getting hammered about being a linux flavor favor

Finding the squabbling dull, I toddle over to Google and the seventh link down is Microsoft's HOWTO...
