[Resolved] Simple Substraction!

Hi:

I have such a simple problem, it's embarrasing. (I do have a good excuse, as I've got the flu.... :eek: )

Anyways, all I wanna do is subtract two numbers, no problem.
But the result is omitting the decimal AND zeros IF it ends in .00

For example:

25.99-23.99 resuls in 2
but I need it to show 2.00
mycode:

$Savings=$i['RegularPrice']-$i['Price'];
echo "$".$Savings;

Both values are coming out a mySQL db, set as float(6,2).

Any ideas?

Hi,

you can use printf or sprintf

http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.sprintf.php

e.g.

printf("\$%.2f",$Savings);

You might try extracting the float value of each variable before running your arithematic. Just use the floatval() function on your $i['RegularPrice'] and $i['Price'] variables.

Sometimes the simplest problems are the hardest to get a grip on.

You'll want to use the BCmath functions for this type of thing. Specifically bcsub() (binary calculator subtraction).


$a = 25.99; 
$b = 23.99; 

$var = bcsub($a, $b, 2);
echo("\$$var");

In the above example the 2 specifies the number of digits right of the decimal (called the "scale").

Couldn't try coditoergosum's solution , because PHP needs to be configured --enable-bcmath. But gave me some nice ideas, thanx😃 😃

Your server doesn't have bcmath enabled? I've never seen a server that didn't... it comes enabled by default with the windows version of php... and all it takes to enable it under *nix is adding --enable-bcmath to your config command. It doesn't even require an external library.

Did you actually try it? If your server really doesn't have it, I'd recommend switching hosts.

coditoergosum: yes I did try it on the server, but it wasn't enabled.
I have control over php configs, so I'll try it because it did sound interesting...
