how to do "left padding" for a number

I want to use lpad(4, $mynumber,'0') to pad my number to 4 digitals. It failed.
What should I use?

Well... lpad() is not a function existing in PHP... is it a funtion you wrote yourself ? If yes, please post your code...

Use printf, but see the docs under fprintf to see the formatting strings.
