Comparing Strings

I need to compare two strings that look like:

First string: This is a very long sentence
Second string: sentence

I want the result to be true if what's in the second string is found anywhere in the first string. What do I use to accomplish this?

Use the fucntion "srtstr".

e.g

strpos is almost it.

The problem with it is that the phrase within the sentance has to be exactly as is. I need it to come back true if it has at least a part true.

For instance:

The quick brown fox jumped up and down.

If I enter:

quick fox jumped

It should bring back true.

Anyone know of the appropriate function?

That is very difficult to do without defining what is meant by "if it has at least a part true"

Fo example, what about the search string "knxdp"?

In your example I would use explode() on the search string to divide it into words, then check for the occurence of each word.
But the thing is, we have no guarantee that such a method will always work since "quickfoxjumped" could be entered.

It might be possible to do what you want with regular expressions, though I have my doubts.
Sill, I have very little expertise in that area so I cant really say.
Again, you have to define precisely what you want.

I guess I know what are you doing ...
First, you should divide the sentence to noun, adjective, verb in order.

and named the compulsory noun, adj and verb that should exist in one sentence in order to make it true for you. So, eg.

The quick brown fox jumped up and down.
compulsory noun = fox
compulsory adj = quick (so, if fast correct or not?)
compulsory verb = jumped (so, if jumps correct or not?)

I don't know how are you going to do with past, present and future ... singular, plural tense.

em... are you trying to build a spelling checker or an essay marker ?
sounds to me like this is what you gonna build..

It's more like a flash card program. You have to compare the possible reponses to the user input.

For instace:

Words to compare it to: street, lamp, computer, printer

Words I enter: computer, street

And that should bring back a TRUE or something like that.

Right now, using strpos(), I have to type a fragment of the string exactly as is, for instance:

street, lamp or lamp, computer .....I can't jumble them around or anything.
