Ok, I'm using PHP 4.2.3 with Apache 2 on Solaris 8. I'm attempting to use Coppermine Photo Gallery. I've uploaded the files to a directy called /gallery and have set the permissions on that directory (and all associated to it) to 777 via "chmod -R 777 gallery". Apache runs as "nobody" and so I've set the owner of the /gallery directory to "nobody" (chown -R gallery nobody). When I attempt to run the Coppermine install.php script I get an error reading, "The 'include' directory (located in the directory where you uploaded Coppermine) should be writable in order to save your configuration." Again, all permissions are set to 777 throughout. Can anyone explain this? Is there a problem between PHP 4.2.3 and Apache 2... or am I just deft (don't answer that)?

your chown command seems to be incorrect, it should be:

chown -R nobody gallery

Did you check that the owner of gallery really is nobody ?

You're right, in my description above I did use the wrong syntax, but I didn't on the server, because the owner of the gallery directory is "nobody".

I have one more idea. The results of is_writable are cached so a susequent call to that function could return that the directory isn't writable even if it is writable. If you call the function clearstatcache () then that cache will be cleared and the check might then be successfull.

Did you try to set $DFLT['cfg_d'] to the absolute path to the include directory ?

Hey Thomas, thanks for the great ideas. We cleared the cache, but that didn't work. Then we set an absolute path. That worked... sort of. We were able to get past the setup and into actually creating albums, but then we ran into similar permissions problems that we couldn't manage to overcome quickly. In the end we decided that Apache 2 doesn't play nicely with PHP 4.2.3. There's another photo album app called "gallery" that I attempted to load and use. I ran into similar problems as I did with Coppermine. Interesting thing though. They specifically state on their web site that they won't provide any support for folks that are using anything but PHP 4.3 with Apache 2. PHP 4.3 has problems of its own, so I'm not going to upgrade to it. Instead, we've decided to downgrade Apache 2 to Apache 1.3. I'm pretty certain that this will solve the problem. I'll post back here after I've had a chance to install Apache 1.3 and test things out. Again, thanks for your ideas.
