[Resolved] Date Subtraction

I am using dates such as date("M-d-Y") which gives me May-16-2003 and in a particular query, I want to limit the amount of data someone sees by date posted, so how do I subtract, say, 7 days from this date?

I thought about converting the date to the epoch time, subtracting, then converting back, but I don't know how to convert back to my date format from the raw number. Also the same problem with converting to the dayofyear with date("z").

It would be a calculation 7 days less than today's date to make it easy...well, easy if you know how to do it.

$cutOffDate = date('M-d-Y', mktime(date('m'), date('d')-7, date('Y')));

I tried the code, and echoing $cutOffDate just gives me today's date.
