Do sessions use cookies?

If not, how do they work?

how can you register a variable in a session that is valid for 2 minutes?

for example..
a user visits a site, i start a session, with $visited=True.. after 2 minutes, the session ends. if a user wants to visit page2.html, he must first visit page1.html (as an example). page1 starts the session, page2 will only load if the session has been started

please tell me sessions can work without cookies..

Well you don't need to go to that much effort. One page one store something in a session variable to the effect that page one was visited. Then on page two look to see if that session variable has that something in it. You could even store the time, but remember that that is the time the page was served, and doesn't take into account the amount of time spent reading it.

sessions don't use cookies. It may be an idea to learn a bit about sessions before you start putting timing devices on it?

if user does not allow cookies, but the configuration permits it, will the sessions fail?

You didn't read the manual, did you? That page, third paragraph. Also the list of configuration settings.
