How to append to a file, write to the first line, and delete the last line?

in a file.. lets say it contains

word
some sentance
another line
more stuff

how can you write to the first line, deleting the last? say you wanted to write "hello" to it.. it would then look like

hello
word
some sentance
another line

anyone know?

I know this is possible with databases, but I don't think it would work with flatfile....

Maybe, you could echo the file in a text box, the manually delete the last item and add the top one?!
