How can you read/write to a file by lines?

how can i make a top referrers table in php ? (with a text file)

the file would be structured like this: (site,hits)

when a page is loaded, the site is searched for in the file.. if it is found, its corresponding hits are increased by 1 and the file is saved..

how can i do this?

ie..
site.com,21
fred.org,43
mike.ca,20

how can i see if "mike.ca" exists in the file, and if it does, add one to the corresponding hits?

I do not think PHP has random-access file capabilities.

I think you will need to read the file, change the 1 line, then re-write the entire file.

This is why after a certain amount of data, people start using MySQL Databases to handle it instead of text files.

PHP does have random-access file capabilities, but not with text files, because text files aren't random-access. And text files aren't random-access because the filesystem provides no way of finding out in advance where lines end and begin without reading the file to find out where the newline characters are. And if you're already reading the file to find out that, there's not a lot of point reading it again to get its contents.
