uninstalling mysql (unix)

I am completely new at php and mysql and I think that I have installed mysql incorrectly on my computer. I would like to uninstall it and start over. Could some one help me?

Are you telling that no one knows how to uninstall MySQL?! Or has no Idea of how to reinstall it! Is everyone a novice?

anyway, this is on unix, correct? well, i'm pretty prficient witht the thing, but seeing as i've never used it primarily (that's about to change 😃) i have NO idea how to uninstall mysql. sry 🙁

It might help if you told us a little bit of info.

Is this Linux, windows, BSD, MVS, Solaris, HPUX, QNX, or what OS?

Is this a build from the .tar.gz file, or a packaged install?

If it's a package, then uninstall the package with your operating system's package manager. rpm -e packagename for most redhat style linuxes.

If it's an install from source, then likely mysql installed somewhere like /usr/local/mysql.

the good news is that you can just delete that directory (/usr/local/mysql) or whatever it's called.

True. but then again, saying Unix is only slightly more descriptive than saying "computer". There's a lot of flavors of unix out there, and each one has it's own package management system.

Hey, it's got a Posix layer, right? 😉

And if you add cygwin, it is unix to the application.

But seriously, my main point was that he was asking how to uninstall, and the totality of information about what OS he was running was Unix. Solaris installs packages completely differnet from HPUX, and so on. Why windows wound up in my list I'm not entirely sure.

I am running mac osx 10.2.6
I tried to install MySQL and I am quite certain that i did it incorrectly.
I have no experience with using the terminal, and I do not have BBEdit, nor the funds to purchase it.
At one point I was able to gain access to MySQL and do somethings, but that is not happening now.

Currently I am receiving an error message saying
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'

I used to have a drive on my desktop that said MySQL but it has dissapeared. I reinstalled MySQL and it shows up. Or if I open a .dmg file

If you haven't notice I have no clue to what I am doing. I need lots of help!

So, did you install by downloading a .tar.gz file and doing the ./configure; make; make install method, or was it an executable?

I installed it using a .tar.gz file

Then it should have installed to a directory like /usr/local/mysql or something.

If that's the case, then you can probably just do the whole install over and it should overwrite the old installation. Note that if the database is corrupted and you don't need anything in it, you might need to delete everything in the /usr/local/mysql (or /opt or /var... or wherever it is.)

I know it is either in /usr/local/mysql or /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql

but I get these messages

/usr/local/mysql : Permission denied.

and for /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql I get
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

any thoughts

Yeah, you can't execute just the directory.

If it's in /usr/local/mysql, then you should have a mysqld command in the /usr/local/mysql/bin/ or sbin directory.

Just run that as root and see if the database starts.

shell> sudo ./bin/mysql

shell>sudo ./bin/mysqld_safe
Password: "my password"
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /Library/MySQL/var 030521 16:31:26 mysqld ended
