[Resolved] Php based website

Ok im wanted to revamp my site with my own php code. currently use phpnuke and im tired of its short comings. Ive upgraded our server to the latest php so now were wanting to create our own site. Our problem is were not sure on what to search for.

we want something to this nature:

www.thewebsite.com/index.php
this will be the starting point of course.

what we would like is when a link is clicked on that it will display the new contents in the window but not change to a new page.

so heres some ascii

Link1> link1contentlink1content
Link2> link1contentlink1content
Link3>

what i would like to do is when the user clicks say link3 you would see this.

and they will still be on the index page. is this possible?

Yeah, it's no problem. What most people do is use the url to specify which part of the page you're looking at, eg,

http://myserver.com/index.php?page=3

Then in your index.php file, you have:

switch($_GET['page']) {

case '1': 

	// Everything from page 1 here
	break;

case '2':

	// Everything from page 2 here
	break;

case '3':

	// Everything from page 3 here
	break;

default: 

	// Everything you see if $_GET['page']doesn't exist
	break;

$GET[] will get this value from the URL (index.php?page=home).
$POST[] will get this value from a form.

is that the main idea behind phpnuke or do they do someting different?

Can i pull data from other files with php?

Using my index file can i pull data say from another file? or would it be better to just pull the data from a database?

I do both. I include my page templates (eg. page=3 for my site is 'tutorials', so in the case '3': I have include '../inc/tutorials.inc.php') and those pages get the actual DATA from a database. Nice and fast, dynamic and secure 🙂

The functions you're gonna want to be using for that are include() and the MySQL functions.

with the suggested switch and the includes this is now easy.
